The USC Concert Choir is the university’s premier choral ensemble, serving as a musical ambassador across the United States and throughout the world. Under the direction of Dr. Larry Wyatt, Director of Choral Studies, in 1987, they performed for the visit of Pope John Paul II, and in 1988 were invited to perform three concerts with the Jerusalem Symphony under Lawrence Foster, Sergiu Comissiona, and Krystof Penderecki. Under Maestro Penderecki, they performed his St. Luke Passion. In 1990, and again in 2013, they traveled to Spain, singing multiple performances of Handel’s Messiah and Bach’s b minor mass respectively. In 1992 they were the headline group at the Southern Division American Choral Directors Association convention performing J.S. Bach’s St. John Passion. The choir toured Italy and Bulgaria in 2004, presenting premiere performances of J.A.C. Redford’s oratorio the Martyrdom of St. Polycarp. In the summer of 2008, they traveled to Beijing, Xian, and Shanghai as part of the prelude to the Summer Olympics. In 2010 they were again the headline group on the Southern Division Convention of ACDA, performing a commissioned setting of the St. Matthew Passion by William Averitt. In 2013, the Concert Choir and University Chorus performed the American debut of Herbert Howells’ Sir Patrick Spens.
