Trumpet, French Horn and Piano

Zoë Perkins is a fourth year undergraduate student at the Royal Academy of Music (RAM), studying trumpet with Mark David and natural trumpet with Bob Farley. During her time at the Academy Zoë has enjoyed performing with the Symphonic Brass ensemble, as well as in the Symphony Orchestra, where she has worked with prestigious conductors including Edward Gardner and Manuel López-Gómez. Alongside her commitments at the RAM, she has taken on various external opportunities, such as travelling to Italy for the International “Citti de Porcia Competition” in November 2019. She has performed concerti around the UK, including three performances of the Haydn Trumpet Concerto. Her most recent performance of this work took place in The Parish Church of All Saints Orpington, performing with the Orpington Symphony Orchestra. In December 2018 Zoë performed the Vivaldi Double Trumpet Concerto at St James Piccadilly alongside the Piccadilly Ensemble, and was invited back the following year to perform the same work.
Other solo performances include recitals in Paris, London and Cambridge. In 2018 Zoë performed in the American Cathedral in Paris for an afternoon recital. She has recently given recitals in Cambridge Emmanuel United Reform Church, as well as New Malden United Reform Church in October 2019. Zoë has been offered postgraduate places at both the Royal Academy of Music, and the Royal College of Music, and will commence a postgraduate degree in September 2020. She hopes to continue her solo performances in the future, as she works towards gaining a seat in an orchestra.
Stephen Payne started playing the horn age 10 and just five years later he successfully auditioned for Junior Guildhall and began studying with David Bentley. Later that year Stephen was selected to play Principal Horn in the LSO Youth Orchestra at the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Having developed a keen interest in Musical Theatre, Stephen auditioned for The National Youth Music Theatre and was selected to play Principal Horn on a whole host of award winning shows.
Stephen has had the opportunity to perform at venues such as The Royal Albert Hall, Cadogan Hall, Birmingham Symphony Hall and The Royal Festival Hall, as well as having opportunities to record at Air Studios and Abbey Road Studios.
During his time at the Royal Academy Stephen has played under conductors such as Semyon Bychkov and Edward Gardner OBE. Outside the Academy Stephen has played with the London Mahler Orchestra, The National Youth Jazz Orchestra and the Docklands Sinfonia, performing in the World Premiere of the new musical “Men who March Away” by Mike Batt.
Outside of Solo playing, Stephen has recently completed the prestigious LRAM Teaching Diploma with Paul Harris and John Hutchins, and has been having a lot of success with his Horn quartet ‘Capital Horns’. Further recent successes include being invited to audition for the Scottish Chamber Orchestra the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and the London Symphony Orchestra as well as being awarded the Horn chair of the National Youth Jazz Orchestra.
Recent Performances of note include: The Royal Opening of the Francis Crick Institute with GMT Brass Ensemble, an appearance on BBC Channel 4’s ‘The Last Leg’, a Performance at the BBC Proms 2019 and two main shows at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club with NYJO in the presence of Prince Edward.
Daniel King Smith has given concerts all over the world as both soloist and accompanist. He has broadcast on both BBC TV/Radio in the UK and on NHK TV/Radio in Japan, most recently in recital with Yuki Ito as part of NHK’s “Best of Classic” and “Classic Club” series. Daniel has recorded a number of CDs, including releases with Yuki Ito for Sony and with Anna Hashimoto on the Meridian label.
As a soloist, Daniel’s extensive concerto repertoire has led to many concerts in the UK and around Europe. He has frequently been a featured Solo Classical Artist on many Cruise lines around the world.
Accompaniment and chamber music are a major part of Daniel’s life, having held staff accompanist posts at both Royal College of Music and Royal Academy of Music Junior Departments and at the Purcell School. He is official accompanist for the Tunbridge Wells International Young Concert Artists competition. Daniel is often resident pianist on summer music courses including the British Isles Music Festival and Musicale. He has given recitals with Michael Collins, Carmel Kaine, Susan Milan, Robert Max, Yuki Ito and Anna Hashimoto, amongst many others and is a member of the Ridgeway Ensemble.
